Neuroplasticity: You Can Rewire Your Brain

You can rewire your brain. Most people just don’t bother.

Your brain, its structure and how it works, isn’t fixed. It isn’t hardwired, and it isn’t the finished article you’ve been handed and have to make do with for the rest of your life.

I know that’s not what it feels like when you’ve thought the same way for twenty years, when the same anxiety kicks in every time something goes wrong, when you catch yourself having the exact same internal argument you’ve had for as long as you can remember. It feels like you’re dealing with permanent architecture. You’re not, and there’s decades of neuroscience to prove it.

Neuroplasticity is your brain’s ability to remodel itself in response to experience, learning, and repeated thought patterns. It’s the mechanism by which your brain creates new connections, strengthens existing pathways, and sometimes dismantles the ones that aren’t helping you anymore. And it’s either working for you right now, building and reinforcing the thinking patterns that move your life forward, or it’s working against you, cementing the ones that keep you stuck.

The choice about which way that goes is more in your hands than you’ve been led to believe.

What’s Actually Happening in Your Head

Every time you think, you’re using neural pathways in your brain. These are physical connections between neurons, the nerve cells of the brain, which are built and strengthened through repetition. The more often you think a particular thought or run a particular mental pattern, the stronger and more automatic that pathway becomes. Use it enough and it becomes your default way of thinking. Use it long enough and it becomes unconscious.

This is how habits of thought form. Not through weakness of character or some fixed personality trait you were born with, but through simple repetition. Your brain optimises for efficiency. It finds the paths you use most and makes them easier to travel. Over time, the most heavily used pathways in combination become your default mindset, the mental territory your brain navigates to automatically without you consciously choosing it.

Modern brain imaging has made this visible in remarkable ways. We can now watch which areas of the brain light up in response to different kinds of thinking, and we can see how those patterns change with experience. Anxiety, for example, activates a very specific network of brain regions. Prolonged exposure to stress or trauma can literally wire your brain to be more reactive, so that triggers your nervous system would once have handled with some manageable discomfort now trip a full alarm response. Your brain has learned to be anxious. And because it’s learned it, it can unlearn it too.

The Squint: Why This Matters More Than You Think

I want to take you back to something I see regularly in clinical practice, because it makes the stakes of neuroplasticity very concrete.

When paediatricians examine young babies, one of the things they check carefully for is a squint, where one eye turns inward or outward rather than tracking with the other eye. It looks like a cosmetic issue. It isn’t. It’s a neurological emergency with a tight window for intervention.

Here’s what happens if a squint goes untreated. The turned eye isn’t receiving normal visual input from the environment. Without that stimulation, the neural pathways between that eye and the brain simply don’t develop properly. The brain, being efficient, starts to ignore signals from the affected eye and routes all its visual processing through the good one. By the time a child reaches age seven or eight, those pathways are effectively gone. Even if you surgically correct the squint perfectly, the child will remain visually impaired in that eye. The hardware works. The software just never got written.

The treatment is counterintuitive. Before correcting the squint, doctors patch the good eye for a period each day, forcing the weaker eye to work, forcing the brain to build the connections it would otherwise skip. The window for this intervention is narrow. Miss it, and the damage is permanent.

This is neuroplasticity in its most stark form. The brain develops the pathways it uses and allows the ones it doesn’t to wither. Your adult brain isn’t quite as time-sensitive as an infant’s visual system, but the principle is exactly the same. The pathways you exercise grow stronger. The ones you neglect fade. What you repeatedly think about, you become better at thinking about.

Learning to Ride a Bike (And Why You Can’t Forget How)

Here’s a more everyday example of neuroplasticity you’ve already experienced, even if you never thought of it this way.

Think about when you learned to ride a bike. In the beginning it was completely conscious, demanding your full attention. Balance, pedalling, steering, looking where you were going, all of it fighting for your conscious bandwidth simultaneously. You probably wobbled. You probably fell. It was genuinely difficult.

Then something shifted. The cerebellum, which handles complex coordination tasks, began integrating all that sensory information, the visual input, the proprioceptive feedback from your muscles, the vestibular signals from your inner ear, and started generating the tiny automatic adjustments needed to keep you upright and moving. Those adjustments happen thousands of times per second. You’re not consciously making them. They’ve been handed off to a part of your brain that runs the programme automatically.

That’s why you can get on a bike thirty years later and ride it without thinking. The pathway didn’t disappear because you stopped using it for a while. Procedural memory, once consolidated, is extraordinarily durable. And the process that built it, repetition until the pathway is strong enough to run without supervision, is the same process you can use deliberately to build better ways of thinking.

Your Brain Is Running Software, and Sometimes It Needs an Upgrade

I find it useful to compare your brain to a computer, not because it’s a perfect analogy (it isn’t; your brain is considerably more impressive than any machine we’ve built so far), but because it makes the concept of changing your thinking feel less abstract and more like something you can actually do.

Your brain, like a computer, has hardware, which is its physical structure, the neurons, the synapses, the regions and networks. And it runs software, which is your patterns of thought, your emotional responses, your automatic interpretations of events. Your consciousness, what you’re aware of and how you feel at any given moment, is like what you see on the screen: the output of processes mostly running in the background.

Now here’s the thing about software. You can change it. You can uninstall programmes that aren’t working. You can install better ones. You can choose which applications run automatically when the system starts up. The question is whether you’re doing this deliberately or just letting whatever got installed in your childhood keep running by default.

Most people are running mental software they never chose. Anxious interpretations of ambiguous situations, defaulting to self-blame when things go wrong, catastrophising at the first sign of difficulty. These programmes were installed through experience and repetition, often in early life when you had very little say about what you were being exposed to. But you’re not a child anymore, and neuroplasticity means you’re not stuck with the original installation.

How You Actually Rewire Your Brain

Marcus Aurelius figured this out two thousand years before we had brain scanners. “Our life is what our thoughts make it.” He was describing neuroplasticity without the vocabulary, because he’d noticed what careful observers have always noticed: sustained patterns of thought shape who you become.

Here’s how to use this deliberately. The pathway you use most becomes your default. So if you want a different default, you need to start using a different pathway more consistently, even when the old one is louder and more automatic. Especially then.

When anxiety fires and your brain tries to run its catastrophe programme, you interrupt it. Not by suppressing it or pretending it isn’t happening, but by deliberately running a different thought pattern instead. You look for evidence that contradicts the catastrophe. You ask what you’d tell a friend in this situation. You remind yourself of times you got through similar difficulties. You do this deliberately, consciously, repeatedly, and each time you do, you’re strengthening a different pathway.

This is not quick. Building a new neural pathway takes time and repetition. Research on habit formation suggests that new patterns need dozens, sometimes hundreds, of repetitions before they start becoming automatic. Norman Doidge’s work documenting cases of brain change shows that the patients who achieved the most significant neurological rewiring were the ones who practised their new patterns relentlessly, even when it felt artificial and forced, because they understood that the discomfort of the unfamiliar was exactly the feeling of building something new.

What you’re doing when you practise a new way of thinking is exactly what the doctors were doing when they patched the good eye. You’re forcing the weaker pathway to work. You’re making the brain build connections it would rather skip. And over time, those connections strengthen until the new pattern starts to feel as natural as the old one.

Getting Unstuck

Some of you are stuck in ways of thinking that have been running so long and so automatically that you’re not even aware of them as thoughts anymore. They just feel like reality. The world is threatening. Change is dangerous. You’re not capable of more than this. These aren’t facts. They’re deeply worn neural pathways that your brain has mistaken for facts through sheer repetition.

Therapy works, in part, precisely because it asks you to look at your thinking from the outside and find alternative interpretations. That’s not just psychological comfort. It’s neurological intervention. Every time a therapist asks you to question an automatic assumption and find a different perspective, they’re asking your brain to run a pathway it hasn’t been using. With enough repetition, that pathway gets stronger and the old automatic one gets relatively quieter.

Gandhi is widely quoted as having said, “A man is a product of his thoughts. What he thinks of, he becomes.” Whether he ever said it in quite those words is debated, but the underlying claim doesn’t depend on the attribution. It’s not motivational poster wisdom. It’s a description of a mechanism.

You become what you repeatedly think. Your brain builds itself around its most used patterns. Which means the single most powerful thing you can do to change your life from the inside is to start paying deliberate attention to how you’re thinking, catch the automatic patterns that aren’t serving you, and start running different ones, on purpose, until they take.

Your brain will catch up. That’s what it does.
