Intuition — When Your Brain Knows Before You Do

Have you ever known something before you could explain why? A decision that felt obviously right, or obviously wrong, before you’d worked out the reasons?

That’s intuition. And you’ve got it too, even if you don’t trust it.

In a new situation, intuition can feel absent, or you can mistake a rushed decision for a gut one. Real intuition needs time to build. Time to become something you can actually rely on. We’re covering it here because now is exactly the point where you can start building the intuitive judgment that becomes automatic later on.

When Your Brain Knows Before You Do

I know this feeling well from my own work. That moment when you know something’s seriously wrong with a patient before you’ve even finished taking the history, never mind got the test results back. When your gut screams “not right” but the numbers haven’t caught up yet.

Here’s what most people get wrong about intuition. They think it’s some mystical sixth sense, a magical gut feeling that appears from nowhere, the universe speaking to you, or your higher self making contact.

Bollocks.

Intuition is your brain doing complex calculations faster than your conscious mind can keep up. It’s pattern recognition on steroids. It’s years of experience compressed into a split-second feeling that something is or isn’t right.

Let me tell you about a patient who came to see me a little over five years ago. She walked in, sat down, and within thirty seconds I knew something was seriously wrong. Not the “I’ve got a cold” wrong. The “this needs urgent investigation” wrong.

Her observations were all essentially normal. She looked well. She was articulate and calm. But something in the way she moved, the slight hesitation in her speech, the speed of her breathing, her colour, the way she held herself, my intuition was screaming at me.

Turned out she had a silent pulmonary embolism. The scans confirmed it later that day. If I’d ignored that feeling and sent her home reassured, the outcome could have been very different.

Was that magic? No. That was years of seeing thousands of patients, my brain unconsciously processing hundreds of tiny details faster than I could consciously analyse them.

What Intuition Actually Is

The formal definition of intuition is the ability to make a decision based not on conscious reasoning or apparent evidence, but on a feeling that what you’re doing is the right thing to do. But that definition makes it sound random, like you’re just guessing and hoping for the best.

You’re not guessing. Your brain is computing.

When you meet someone with good intuition, they seem to make the right decisions instantly at critical times. They don’t appear to think. They just know. And they’re usually right.

Early in my medical career, I trained as a surgeon. I remember being in awe of some of the consultant surgeons I worked for. They could decide when to take a patient to theatre, knowing exactly what to do at the right time, sometimes with limited information. Lives were literally hanging in the balance, and they’d make calls that seemed almost supernatural.

But now I know there’s a lot more to intuition than basic gut instinct.

Intuition is the result of training and experience. It’s the way your brain handles complex information and comes up with the answer faster than you’re consciously aware of it happening.

Say to yourself: seven sevens are… and forty-nine just arrives in your brain without effort. You don’t have to add all the sevens together to get the answer. There was, however, a time way back in primary school when you did have to consciously put some effort in. You had to actually count, actually think, actually work for it.

But because you practised and put in conscious effort back then, that’s why you intuitively and instinctively know what seven sevens are today, in an instant, no thinking required.

That’s what all intuition is: conscious practice that becomes unconscious mastery.

The Mathematics of Intuition

Here’s the equation: repeated experience plus conscious reflection equals unconscious intuition.

Studies in cognitive neuroscience show that expert decision-makers process information through what’s called chunking. Instead of analysing every individual piece of data, their brains group patterns together and recognise them instantly. Chess grandmasters don’t see just the individual pieces on a board. They see patterns, strategies, threats, and opportunities all at once.

Research by Gary Klein on naturalistic decision-making found that experienced firefighters, nurses, and military commanders rarely compare multiple options when making critical decisions. In the vast majority of cases, they recognise a pattern from past experience and simply know what to do, rather than weighing up alternatives. That’s not the same as saying the decision itself is always right; it just means the decision usually gets made by recognition rather than deliberation.

Your intuition gets better with experience, and it gets better with training and knowledge. By learning to listen to your intuition, you can not only make better decisions, but also make fewer bad ones.

Intuition in Sport: When Thinking Gets in the Way

Trusting your intuition allows you to let go and let things flow. We can train ourselves to do things instinctively. In sport, if you don’t let go and do things instinctively, you overthink. Your movements become clunky. You lose the flow. Your thinking and emotion get in the way, and you do what’s known as choking.

What’s happening when you choke is that your conscious mind can’t keep up with what should be an unconscious process. Unconscious things happen quicker, they happen automatically, and too much rational thinking, worry or overthinking gets in the way.

Research on choking under pressure by Sian Beilock shows that when expert athletes try to consciously control automatic movements, their performance actually deteriorates. The tennis player who thinks about their serve technique in the middle of a match. The footballer who overthinks a penalty. The golfer who suddenly becomes aware of their grip.

They’re dragging a fast, unconscious process back into slow, conscious thinking. And it falls apart.

Intuition isn’t just important in sport. We use it whenever we’re faced with complex tasks, and to a degree, whenever we make any decision, especially complex ones.

When Your Facts Don’t Match Your Feeling

I use intuition constantly in my job. Sometimes I get a feeling that a patient is unwell within moments of starting the consultation. I then spend the rest of the consultation going through the facts, examining and eliciting clinical signs to see if things add up.

Usually my fact-finding agrees with my clinical intuition. The problem is what happens when the facts don’t immediately point in the same direction as your intuition, and you get this feeling that something’s just not right, but the facts tell you it’s fine.

At these times, you need to learn to trust that little niggle and start looking at things a bit deeper instead.

Malcolm Gladwell’s book Blink explores this phenomenon of thin-slicing, where our brains make accurate judgments based on minimal information. But here’s what Gladwell gets right, and what most people miss: thin-slicing only works when you’ve got expertise in the domain you’re making judgments about.

You can’t have accurate intuition about something you know nothing about. Your gut feeling about quantum physics is probably rubbish. Your gut feeling about whether your teenager is lying to you? That might be spot on, because you’ve got years of data your brain is processing.

When Intuition Goes Wrong

Here’s the thing people don’t tell you about intuition: it can be wrong. Not often, if it’s genuine expertise-based intuition. But it can be fooled by biases, by what you want to be true, by fear or hope clouding your pattern recognition.

Daniel Kahneman’s work on cognitive biases shows that what we think is intuition is sometimes just confirmation bias in disguise. We “intuitively” believe something because we want it to be true, not because our expert brain has recognised a pattern.

The difference? Real intuition feels calm. It’s quiet certainty. False intuition feels urgent, emotional, often anxious. Real intuition says “something’s not right here.” False intuition says “I hope this works out” or “I really want this to be true.”

Building Better Intuition

So how do you develop better intuition? The same way you developed your multiplication tables. Practice. Reflection. Repetition.

When you get moments of intuition, it’s usually because you know what to do, because you’ve drilled, practised, and trained for that moment, or you’ve been in that situation before, reflected on it, and learned what to do. So when you’re in the same situation again, your mind can unconsciously put together all the facts quicker than you’re consciously able to do so.

You don’t get stuck in the decision-making. Instead, you just do.

Here’s the process for building intuition in any domain.

First, you learn consciously. You study. You practise with deliberate attention. You make mistakes and analyse them. This is the seven-times-table phase.

Second, you reflect. After each experience, you think about what happened, what worked, what didn’t. Research by Gary Klein shows that reflective practice is what separates experts who develop accurate intuition from experienced practitioners who just accumulate years without improving.

Third, you practise until it’s automatic. You repeat the pattern enough times that your brain starts recognising it without conscious effort. The calculation happens in the background.

Fourth, you learn to trust it. This is often the hardest part. You have the intuition, but you second-guess it. You override it with logical analysis that leads you astray. You’ve got to learn when to listen to that quiet voice that says “not right” even when you can’t yet articulate why.

The Knowing-Doing-Trusting Triangle

There are times when we just know something is right, or something is wrong. When we already know what it is we need to do. The problem is we can talk ourselves out of doing it, and get stuck making the decision instead of acting on it.

Your intuition is the bridge between knowing and doing. When you’re paralysed by analysis, when you’re drowning in data, when you can’t see the next move because there are too many options, that’s when intuition cuts through the noise.

But you’ve got to trust it. And trust only comes from practice.

The key is knowing when to trust your gut and when to slow down and analyse. Simple decisions with clear right answers? Analyse. Complex decisions with multiple uncertain variables and time pressure? Trust your expertise-based intuition.

The Practice

Start paying attention to your intuitive hits and misses. When you get a feeling about something, note it. Then later, check if you were right. If you were, ask yourself what pattern your brain might have been recognising. If you were wrong, ask yourself whether it was genuine expertise-based intuition, or just hope, fear, or bias masquerading as insight.

Build expertise in the domains where you need good intuition. You can’t shortcut this. You need the repeated practice, the reflection, the pattern recognition, built up over time. There’s no fixed number of hours that guarantees it; some estimates run to thousands, others to a few thousand, depending on the field, but the direction of travel is the same either way. And then, when you’ve put in the work, learn to trust that quiet voice that knows before you consciously know you know.

That’s when intuition guides you to make the first step. Trust it. But earn the right to trust it first.
