Cognitive Biases: Why Your Thinking Works Against You

I want to tell you about a patient I saw in my consulting room. He was a smoker, had been for decades, and wasn’t interested in stopping. We’d had the conversation more than once. The health risks were well established and he knew them. But he had an answer ready every time.

His grandfather had smoked all his life. Seventy years of cigarettes, and he’d lived to ninety without any significant health problems. If it hadn’t hurt his grandfather, why would it hurt him?

From the inside, that felt like a reasonable argument. A real example, from his own family, of someone who had smoked heavily and survived to a ripe old age. What could be more concrete than that?

What he was experiencing is one of the most well-documented thinking errors in psychology. And understanding it changes how you see not just smoking, but dozens of decisions you make every day.

What a Cognitive Bias Actually Is

A cognitive bias is a systematic error in automatic thinking. Not a random mistake. Not a lapse in concentration. A predictable, consistent pattern of thinking that produces distorted conclusions while feeling completely rational.

That last part is what makes biases so effective at keeping people stuck. They don’t feel like errors. They feel like clear, reasonable thinking. You’re not aware you’re being biased while it’s happening. You’re just thinking, and the thinking feels sound.

Psychologists have catalogued well over a hundred cognitive biases. They affect everyone. They affect intelligent, educated, self-aware people just as much as anyone else, because they operate in System 1, below the level of conscious awareness, where your intelligence and self-awareness can’t reach them. You can’t reason your way out of a bias you can’t see.

The Availability Heuristic

The thinking error my patient was making is called the availability heuristic. It works like this: your brain judges the likelihood of something based on how easily an example comes to mind. If you can think of a vivid, memorable instance of something, your brain treats that as evidence that it’s common or likely. If you can’t easily think of an example, it feels unlikely or rare.

This shortcut is usually efficient. If you’ve seen something happen frequently, you probably can recall examples easily, and frequency and availability tend to correlate. The problem comes when availability and actual probability diverge.

My patient could think of one very vivid, very personal example of a smoker who lived to ninety. His grandfather. Someone he knew, loved, and remembered clearly. That example was highly available to his memory, which made his brain treat it as representative. It wasn’t. It was one data point from a population of millions, selected not because it was typical but because it was personally meaningful.

What his brain was filtering out, automatically and invisibly, was the much larger body of evidence pointing in the other direction. The statistics. The mechanism of disease. The majority of smokers whose outcomes looked nothing like his grandfather’s. That evidence existed, but it wasn’t vivid. It wasn’t personal. It wasn’t available in the same way. So it didn’t register with the same weight.

He wasn’t being stupid. He was being human. The availability heuristic affects all of us, in situations far more consequential than we usually realise.

Where You’ll See This in Your Own Life

The availability heuristic shows up constantly in how people assess risk, make decisions, and judge what’s normal.

You hear about a plane crash and suddenly flying feels dangerous, even though statistically it’s one of the safest ways to travel. The crash is vivid, memorable, and highly available. The thousands of safe flights that happened the same day are invisible.

You know someone who started a business and failed spectacularly. That vivid example sits in your memory, and every time you consider starting something yourself, it surfaces. The many people who started businesses and built something solid aren’t as memorable, so they don’t weigh as heavily.

You’ve tried to change something about yourself before, and it didn’t work. That experience is available. It shapes how you assess the likelihood of success next time, often far more than it should.

In every case, the bias feels like realism. Like you’re just being sensible and drawing on your experience. You are drawing on your experience. The problem is that your experience is being filtered and weighted in ways you’re not aware of, producing conclusions that feel grounded but are actually distorted.

What Cognitive Debiasing Does

The process of cognitive debiasing doesn’t require you to ignore your experience or pretend your memories aren’t real. It requires you to see the filter.

Once my patient could understand what the availability heuristic was and how it worked, he could see what his thinking was doing. He wasn’t suddenly able to un-remember his grandfather. But he could see that one vivid example wasn’t the same as representative evidence. He could hold both things at once: his grandfather’s experience, and the broader picture his brain had been filtering out.

That’s what awareness does. It doesn’t eliminate the bias, but it loosens its grip. It gives you a fighting chance of correcting for it before it drives your decision.

This library works through this process for the thinking errors most likely to be keeping you stuck at each stage of your journey. Not as a theoretical exercise, but as a practical skill. The more biases you can recognise in your own thinking, the less automatic power they have over you.
