In Stephen R. Covey’s book  The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People he introduced the concept of the Circle of Influence and the Circle of Concern.

The Circle of influence is a circle that surrounds you and it is your ability to effect your environment.

The Circle of concern is a larger circle that surrounds your circle of influence, part of this circle is outside your circle of influence (i.e you can’t at this time do anything about it).

It’s a way of saying that there are some things in life you have no control over.

As you grow as a person, you gain resources and new skills, you status increases and your network grows, this in turn expands your circle of influence.

The degree of how effectively you can influence is dependent on your skill set and the resources available to you at that time.

What does this mean to me?

Don’t worry about thing which are out of your control.

Spend most of your time and effort working on the things you can influence.

You should work persistently at developing new resources and optimising you skill set to maximise your effect and grow your circle of influence.
